What breaks, by the kind of house
Acreage. Out in the county we see a lot of 1990s systems on long refrigerant runs. Many need a contactor and a recharge, and they keep going. A contactor runs $190 to $280, a leak search and recharge $350 to $650. These properties often run on a well and septic, so when a repair touches the condensate line we keep it out of the septic system.
Downtown bungalows. Houses from the 1950s through the 70s have ducts that were never sized for each room's load. When one of them won't cool, we measure static pressure first. Sometimes the answer is a capacitor. Sometimes it's the ducts, and swapping parts won't touch it.
Newer subdivisions. In Heritage Oaks, Kendall Lakes, Sterling Lakes and Mustang Crossing, the call we run most is a clogged condensate drain from a line laid with too little slope. Clearing it costs $150 to $250. Builder-grade variable-speed equipment up there also throws blower motor faults more than the older systems in town.
Price before we pick up a tool
The diagnostic is $99, or $79 for new customers, and it's waived when you approve the repair. The price goes in writing before any work starts. A run capacitor is $180 to $320 with parts and labor. If a compressor goes on a system past twelve years, we write up the repair ($1,800 to $3,500) and the replacement side by side, and you pick.

Our 1960s house downtown isn't cooling. Is it low on refrigerant?
Maybe, but check the airflow first. On those bungalows, the original ducts were never sized for today's room loads, and a not-cooling complaint is often a distribution problem. We measure static pressure before quoting anything.
Can you fix the mini-split in my shop?
Yes. Workshop and garage-conversion mini-splits are a regular Alvin call, and we stock parts for them. Capacitor and refrigerant repairs on a mini-split are priced the same way as on a regular split system.
