"The thermostat says 74 but it feels like a locker room." We hear a version of that on Houston service calls every May through October. The AC is running, the air is cool, and the house is still sticky. Cool-but-clammy has a short list of causes, and most of them are checkable in an afternoon.
Why an AC dehumidifies at all
Moisture removal is a side effect of cooling. Humid air crosses the cold indoor coil, water condenses out of it onto the coil, and that water drains outside. The side effect only works while the system is actually running with good airflow across a cold coil. Anything that shortens runtime, warms the coil, or adds humid air faster than the coil removes it leaves you cool and sticky at the same time.
The causes, in the order we find them
1. Thermostat fan set to ON
When a cooling cycle ends, the coil is still wet with the water it just pulled from your air. With the fan set to ON, the blower keeps pushing air across that wet coil between cycles and evaporates the moisture right back into the ductwork. Set the fan to AUTO and the water drains outside instead. This is the first thing to check because it is free and takes ten seconds.
2. An oversized system short-cycling
An AC that is too big for the house drops the temperature quickly and shuts off in 5 to 8 minutes. That is enough time to cool the air but not enough to condense much water out of it. If your system barely runs and the house never dries out, oversizing is the likely story. The honest fix happens at replacement time with a real Manual J load calculation. Until then, longer and lower is the goal: variable-speed equipment runs long, quiet cycles at partial capacity, which is exactly the recipe for moisture removal.
3. Leaky return ducts in the attic
A Houston attic in July is 120 to 140°F and loaded with moisture. Return ducts with failed joints or crushed flex pull that air in and make your system condition it around the clock. The giveaway is a house that got stickier over the years without any other change. A duct leakage test measures it, and sealing or replacing the failed runs stops it.
4. Ventilation working against you
Bath fans left running all day, a kitchen hood on high through every meal, or a dryer venting a full load all pull air out of the house. That air gets replaced through gaps in the envelope with unconditioned Gulf air. Exhaust fans should run during and shortly after the moisture event, then off.
5. A system problem masquerading as a humidity problem
A coil starved by a clogged filter, low refrigerant, or a failing blower removes less moisture along with less heat. If the sticky house arrived together with weak airflow, longer runtimes, or warm spots, get the system checked before spending anything on dehumidification. Fixing the underlying fault usually fixes the humidity.
6. The house just needs more drying than cooling can provide
Some homes measure high humidity with a perfectly healthy AC: shaded lots, tight newer construction with low cooling load, bay-side air, or shoulder-season weather where the thermostat is satisfied after a few minutes of runtime. When the AC has no reason to run, it cannot dehumidify. That is the case a whole-home dehumidifier is built for. The order of operations
- Measure. Hygrometer in the living area for a week. 45 to 55 percent is the goal.
- Free fixes first. Fan to AUTO, fresh filter, exhaust fans off when idle.
- If cycles are short and the house is clammy, have the sizing conversation before any equipment purchase.
- If the ducts are original or untested, test and seal them.
- Still above 60 percent sustained? Dedicated dehumidification is the right tool, and it is a one-visit install.
