Furnaces on Apollo-era ductwork
Bay Knoll, University Green and Clear Lake Forest went up in the 1960s and '70s. Most of those homes heat with a gas furnace, and a good number still move air through the ducts the builder put in. The returns tend to be small. Starve a furnace of air and the heat exchanger runs hot, the high limit trips, and the burner cycles on and off until an igniter or inducer gives up. Swapping that part without fixing the airflow books the next visit.
Before 1980, duct insulation sometimes contained asbestos, so we test before we cut. Positive results mean we work around those runs or call a licensed abatement contractor, per federal NESHAP rules.

Heat pumps near El Dorado, and the readings
The newer subdivisions toward El Dorado have more heat pumps, often variable-speed. Those get diagnosed with a manometer and refrigerant subcooling. A heat pump stuck in defrost on a frosty morning has nothing in common with a furnace that won't light, and both are normal calls for us on any brand.
Clear Lake has a lot of engineers, and they tend to ask for the data. Ask the tech. If a repair starts creeping toward half the cost of new equipment, we will say so and bring in heating installation in Clear Lake with both prices in writing.

Our Bay Knoll house still has the original ducts. Is that a problem for the furnace?
It can be. Returns in a lot of 1960s and '70s Clear Lake homes are small for the equipment now hanging on them, and a furnace short on air runs hot and trips its limit switch. We check static pressure before blaming the part that failed.
Could the old duct insulation have asbestos in it?
In homes built before 1980, it might. We test before cutting into it. If it comes back positive, we route around those runs or bring in a licensed abatement contractor.
I'm an engineer. Will the tech show me the numbers?
Ask and you will get them: static pressure at the air handler, subcooling at the outdoor unit on a heat pump, gas pressure and CO on a furnace. We are glad to walk through what the manufacturer says they should be.
After Uri, should I have the furnace looked at before winter?
We would. The 2021 freeze showed that a furnace which idles most of the year can be asked to run for days. A fall tune-up is $99 ($79 with our website coupon), and it is a lot easier to get on the schedule in October than during a freeze.
